Spain protests LIVE: Thousands of locals to take to Spanish streets | World | News
An estimated 30,000 people took to the streets of Malaga today to demand affordable housing.
Protesters marched from the Plaza de la Merced, The Olive Press reports, a plaza where eight out of ten homes are used as short-term tourist accommodation.
One demonstrator called Manuel said rental prices had more than doubled since he began working in the city as an engineer in 2015.
“My first rental price was €200 for a room,” he said. “Now the normal price is around €500 to €600.
“In the last five years, there’s been an increase of around 45% of the price of living here, and the salaries aren’t increasing to match this.”
