‘I’ve been to 100 countries around the world – this was my favourite p | Europe | Travel
A travel blogger who has visited 100 countries around the world has named his favourite with Greece taking the honours.
Gabriel Morris, who runs the YouTube channel Gabriel Traveler where he has more than 600,000 subscribers, uploaded a video where he detailed the reasons behind his choices.
The top five was made up of India, Nepal, Thailand and Turkey, but Greece came out on top thanks to the “unreal islands, some of the nicest beaches in the world and the clearest water”.
The travel expert said: “Why I love Greece so much, it is a combination of factors. It is the feeling, the atmosphere, being on unreal islands in the Mediterranean with surreal landscapes.
“Many prefer the tropical island paradise. The weather, almost no rain so you can count on it being a beach day. When you get there you’re going to find some of the nicest beaches in the world and the clearest water. Like looking through glass.
“There are other factors – a lack of bugs, great food, I love the Greek music. It’s so evocative, it fits so perfectly. The ease of travel. Greece is really quite easy.”
Gabriel says he’s been to 59 Greek islands in total. He said that while they “all look really similar” when people are watching the videos, but they are “very different” when you are there in person.
He added: “Many of the countries that did not make this list are certainly countries that I really liked as well. It’s hard to rank when they’re so different and have different things to see.”
In contrast to Greece, Gabriel chose India as his second favourite country due to ‘great variety of things to see and places to experience’ – despite the vast array of challenges that comes with travelling around India.
He listed these are the “widespread garbage problem” along with the noise pollution and honking.
Gabriel said: “With India for me it’s more about getting out of the major cities. My favourite places in India are places like Rishikesh and Varanasi. Of course Goa, amazing beaches.
“I would say India is the place in the world with the greatest variety of things to see, places to experience. There are 22 official languages in India and thousands of dialects.
“So many different religions like Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Christian, Buddhist. Along with different religions comes different culture, and the variety of experiences if off the charts. How totally strange and unfamiliar it is if you’re coming from the West, or Thailand, or Japan, or South America.”
